The Wanderings of Odysseus: A Map of the Odyssey
A lot of people surfing into my Ancient Greece Odyssey website are Googling for a map of Odysseus' wanderings. Since my website is about my travels through Greece and the Greek islands, I'm afraid I'm disappointing some students! So I've searched the web to find a good map that will help them. I've found a good one with some fun artwork/photos of some of the things Odysseus came up against. However, please note: Most places mentioned in Homer's Odyssey are mythical. More than one modern place has local legends about being the island of Circe or the place where Herakles killed the lion. Ancient Greek travellers and geographers debated the geography of old myths all the time. Nevertheless, a general consensus has emerged for many of the places on Homer's map. For example, Scylla and Charybdis, the monster and the whirlpool, have been identified since ancient times with the treacherous rocks and currents between the tip of Sicily and Italy (sometimes the roaring of the local volcano is identified with Scylla). So with that in mind -- this map is not CERTAIN, it's just educated guesses -- check out the external link below. |
