Temporary Disabled Person Placard - CA
This intel refers to California's rules governing handicapped placards, but the procedure is probably similar in other states. In California, there are stringent criteria to determine who qualifies for a handicapped placard -- rightly so. Such permits are reserved for those with severe and permanent disabilities restricting mobility, such as a missing leg. What do you do if you've got a condition that comes and goes, or you're recovering from major surgery that makes it hard to walk? A temporary placard is the answer. You'll need to pick up an application, available from the DMV web site here or at a DMV office. TIP: If you are a member of AAA, they will do many DMV services for you, and they have and can process these forms. Take the form to your doctor and talk it over. Does your situation merit the placard? Be honest! I have arthritis, and I have been careful to leave handicapped spaces for those worse off than me except when I was having a really, really bad flare-up last year AND was due for surgery in a few months. I let it expire after I was up and about from surgery. Your doctor will have to sign the form, specify the reason you need the permit, and set an end-date. Take the form back to the DMV -- or AAA office -- pay the fee ($6 in 2008), and you'll receive a placard to hang from your mirror. Don't forget to take it down while driving. |
